Transfer in Buenos Aires.
Today enjoy a full day excursion to have a deep exploration of this cosmopolitan city. In the early part of the 20th century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world. The grand public buildings of Buenos Aires reflect this opulent era. The so-called ‘Paris of South America’ combines the atmosphere of a former European town with the features of a Latin American capital. Your guide will pick out some of the city’s highlights such as the Obelisk and Plaza de Mayo featuring the Presidential Palace (Pink House) and the Town Hall before heading to Recoleta to wander through its cemetery illustrating Argentina’s history. Once in ‘La Boca’ one of the most visited tourist destinations of Buenos Aires, take some time to snap some pictures of its emblematic street ‘Caminito’ and also celebrate one of Argentina’s greatest passions – soccer. You’ll have the opportunity to visit one of the Argentine sport temples, the stadium known as ‘La Bombonera’, home to Maradona’s former team Boca Juniors. The museum tour will reveal the history behind the Boca Juniors. After a break for lunch you will be driven to San Telmo, the oldest district in the city. Walk along ancient cobblestone streets, admiring old colonial houses, churches and famous antique shops and ateliers.
Dinner at the Rojo Tango will be one to remember, as from the moment you enter Faena Hotel + Universe, one of the most exclusive hotels of the city, you realize that ‘Rojo Tango’ is the tango show that tops all others in Buenos Aires. Walk the red carpet and be received into an intimate setting with a glass of champagne, before an excellent three-course meal is served, whilst enjoying a show of passion and glamour. Offering only 90 seats, the Faena’s cabaret room is swathed in velvet curtains and gilded furniture. Each table gets a front row performance with the dancers twirling and dancing throughout the ballroom. The show retraces the history of tango, starting from its cabaret roots to the modern fusions.
IMPORTANT: Monday to Sunday – Tango show begins at 10:00 pm – Three-course gourmet dinner includes: choice of starter, main course and dessert with coffee and unlimited premium wine, water and champagne(transfers are included –unescorted with Spanish speaking driver)
Flight to Ushuaia the southernmost city in the world and a beautiful combination of mountains, sea, glaciers and forests. Your half-day sightseeing tour begins as you travel back in time and wander the street that was similarly done by the early British missionaries who found the city originally as a settlement of the indigenous ‘Yamana’. You will continue through the districts of Brown and Solier, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Included is a guided visit to the Old Prison of Ushuaia opened in 1896. Its prisoners spent much of their time cutting wood in the surrounding forest, which was used to build the town. During your visit, learn about the life and hardships of the inmates before the prison was closed down in 1947.
Embark on a half day excursion to the ‘End of the World Train’ and the Tierra del Fuego National Park, a stunning national park only 11 km outside Ushuaia. Your first stop will be the End of the World Train. Rebuilt in Britain in 1994 this tiny steam railroad is in fact the southernmost operating rail system in the world. You will leave the station and travel along the route of the old railway, which once held prisoners who chopped timber from the forest and transported it to the city in order to construct buildings. During a brief stop at the Macarena Waterfall Station (Cascada de la Macarena), you will learn about the indigenous Yamana People and climb to a viewpoint before continuing on through the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Ride through the park and enjoy the highlight of the Lapataia Bay and the Green Lake.
Check in between 10:00 and 16:00 at 409 San Martin Street. Board the Australis cruise ship at 17:30. After a welcoming cocktail reception, hosted by the Captain and his crew, the Australis will depart for one of the most remote parts of the planet. The voyage will guide you through the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel to explore one of the most breathtaking wilderness regions in the world: Southern Patagonia, which includes the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.
Cruise through Murray Channel and Nassau Bay to reach Cape Horn National Park, where weather permitting you will disembark. The renowned Cape Horn was discovered in 1616 and is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky peninsula. For years it served as an important navigation route between the Pacific and the Atlantic, and is referred to as the ‘End of the Earth’. The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005.
In the afternoon, you will set foot on shore of the historic Wulaia Bay, formerly the site of one of the region’s largest Yamana indigenous settlements. Charles Darwin landed there in 1833 during his voyage on the HMS Beagle. This area is also notorious for the compelling beauty of its vegetation and geography. You will take an enchanted walk through the Magellan Forest of lengas, coigues, canelos, ferns, and other endemic vegetation in order to reach a panoramic viewpoint.
Sail through Brecknock, Ocasion, Cockburn, and Magdalena Channels to enter the spectacular De Agostini Sound, directly in the heart of the Darwin Mountain Range – the ideal viewing point for observing the glaciers that plummet to the sea from the upper ice field. Later that afternoon, travel once again aboard the Zodiac boat to the Aguila Glacier, where you will start an easy walk to its base. This stroll creates the perfect opportunity to experience the exquisiteness of Patagonia’s cold rainforest and to see how the power of nature has molded the spectacular landscape.
Providing the weather is good, early in the morning you will go ashore to Magdalena Island, situated in the middle of the Strait of Magellan. In one period, the island was an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is populated by a massive colony of Magellan Penguins that you will see during your walk to the lighthouse. In September and April, this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to examine South American Sea Lions. Disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for 11:30 am.
An afternoon of leisure passing by the coast viewing the diverse bird life.
